Welcome to Tranquility Cove

Background

Old Cove Entrance Road in 1947 My father, Robert T. Brown, named the little body of water we live on Tranquility Cove. It has been a focal point of our family for decades. When my father first had the idea to buy this land I recall that the road from Manning to Old River Road was a dirt road. He had a map and we walked from Old River Road to a small stream . He stood there and told me that the water would rise when a dam was completed and that it would come right up to the point where we were standing. I believe that he was going to buy l9 acres for $l00.00 per acre. He would split into l0 lots. Two for Home Place and one each for the eight children. That creek is now Tranquility Cove. He had a plat and I told him I would like to have Lot #l6. For more detailed history please click on the "History" link in the menu for more information or just click here.

The photo above was taken in 1947 from what is now Patriot Road but it used to be called Old River Road. The smaller road leading off to the right was the road into the house my father built on two of the subdivided lots. This house was the site of many happy fishing trips by the family and visitors. Inside the old house was a sign that said, "Bezaleal - Under the Shadow of God."

Old Cove House

Before the original house was built the fishing and hunting trips to the property were wilderness camping trips. For photos of a typical trip click on Old Cove Photos in the top menu or just click here.

After Dad deeded lot #16 to us , I immediately started clearing the lot. I began rooting Azalea's and planting them on the site. I had the equipment to put a well down and that was the first project. The next step was to have electricity run into the lot and from then on it was dreaming of making this our home.

Our first purchase was a used (Like New) mobile home from a guy at Shaw AFB to use on the weekends. We built a pier with Clyde McManus's help. That is a story in itself. We used the Mobile Home for about 3 years and sold it to Mr. K. B. Flowers, a neighbor. Then we bought a house that was built in Lamar, S. C by Coker Builders. They brought it down on trailers, with a crane and the foundation was set before the arrival and from then on it was fast. This was in the late 70's.

Net retired from the Sumter County Health Department in the 1978 and I retired from Wachovia in l982. This gave us two homes and that was too much. Keeping both houses and yards was more than we could handle, so we sold the house at 123 Broad St., in Sumter and moved permanently to Tranquility Cove . That was appprox. 24 yrs ago and we have enjoyed every minute of it. Best neighborhood on the lake. We meet once a month with out Supper Club and every Wednesday Morning at Randolph's Landing for our Breakfast Club. Also, we are members of the Jimmy Snyder Sailing Club and that meets one a month during the summer, so with all of that we are not short on activities.
